The objective of this work was to assess, through consumption and utilization of natural food measurements, whether mulberry cultivars, Morus spp., could be recommended to rear the silkworm, Bombyx mori L., in a commercial scale. The mulberry cultivars Miura (standard), Korin and Tailandesa and the hybrids FM 3/3, FM 86, SK 1 and SK 4 were tested. Seventy five fifth-instar commercial hybrid larvae were individualized in gerbox® unities and maintained in a rearing room (25 ± 3ºC and 80 ± 10% RH).The mulberry leaves of each of the five cultivars used to feed the silkworm larvae were submitted to bromatological analysis. The dry weight of larvae at the beginning and at the end of the fifth instar, the food consumed and the feces eliminated were recorded to...

Characterization and comparison of Serratia marcescens isolated from edible cactus and from silkworm for virulence potential and chitosan susceptibility BJM
Li,Bin; Yu,Rongrong; Liu,Baoping; Tang,Qiaomei; Zhang,Guoqing; Wang,Yanli; Xie,Guanlin; Sun,Guochang.
Representative strains of Serratia marcescens from an edible cactus plant and silkworms were characterized and a comparison based on their cellular fatty acid composition, 16S rRNA and groE gene sequence analysis as well as silkworm virulence and chitosan susceptibility was carried out. Results from this study indicate that there are no significant differences between the phenotypic and molecular characterization, virulence and chitosan susceptibility of the S. marcescens strains from the cactus plant and silkworms. Silkworms inoculated with S. marcescens from either plant or silkworm resulted in nearly 100% mortality. Chitosan solution exhibited strong antibacterial activity against S. marcescens. This activity increased with the increase of chitosan...

Detection and characterization of Wolbachia infection in silkworm Genet. Mol. Biol.
Zha,Xingfu; Zhang,Wenji; Zhou,Chunyan; Zhang,Liying; Xiang,Zhonghuai; Xia,Qingyou.
Wolbachia naturally infects a wide variety of arthropods, where it plays important roles in host reproduction. It was previously reported that Wolbachia did not infect silkworm. By means of PCR and sequencing we found in this study that Wolbachia is indeed present in silkworm. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Wolbachia infection in silkworm may have occurred via transfer from parasitic wasps. Furthermore, Southern blotting results suggest a lateral transfer of the wsp gene into the genomes of some wild silkworms. By antibiotic treatments, we found that tetracycline and ciprofloxacin can eliminate Wolbachia in the silkworm and Wolbachia is important to ovary development of silkworm. These results provide clues towards a more comprehensive understanding...

Nucleopolyhedrovirus infected central nervous system cells of Bombyx mori (L.) (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) Neotropical Entomology
Torquato,Ednéia F.B.; Miranda Neto,Marcilio H. de; Brancalhão,Rose M.C..
BmMNPV, a Nucleopolyhedrovirus isolated from infected Bombyx mori (L.) larvae in Paraná State - Brazil, was used to inoculate healthy 5th-instar B. mori larvae and examine the infection on central nervous system (CNS) cells. Samples of nervous tissue were removed from the infected insects, at different sampling times, and processed for cytopathology studies by light and transmission electron microscopy using routine techniques. The experiment included both inoculated and non-inoculated larvae (control). BmMNPV infection was detected on the 5th day after inoculation in CNS cells. Initially, infection was characterized by nuclear hypertrophy and the presence of virogenic stroma, in which the progeny virions were produced. Virions are enveloped and occluded...

Quality of the mulberry (Morus sp.) in function of storage systems of the branches in pos-harvest MV&Z
Porto, Antonio José.
The quality of the mulberry, measured by moisture in the branch, leaf and stem and by leaf nutrient composition, was evaluated in fresh material and after storage of the branches in five systems (branches depository - 24 hours, system of wet cover and immersion in water-C/I - 24 hours, C/I – 48 hours, C/I – 72 hours and C/I – 96 hours). It was used a completely randomized design, with six treatments and six replications. The moisture and nutrient composition in the mulberry leaf were maintained at levels appropriate for feeding of silkworm, as in the branches stored in depository as in systems of cover and immersion for up 72 hours.

Standard method for detecting Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus disease-resistant silkworm varieties Rev. Bras. entomol.
Qiong,Yang; Dong Xu,Xing; Qing Rong,Li; Yang,Xiao; Ming Qiang,Ye.
ABSTRACT Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) disease is one of the most serious silkworm diseases, and it has caused great economic losses to the sericulture industry. So far, the disease has not been controlled effectively by therapeutic agents. Breeding resistant silkworm varieties breeding may be an effective way to improve resistance to BmNPV and reduce economic losses. A precise resistance-detection method will help to accelerate the breeding process. For this purpose, here we described the individual inoculation method (IIM). Details of the IIM include pathogen BmNPV preparation, mulberry leaf size, pathogen volume, rearing conditions, course of infection, and breeding conditions. Finally, a resistance comparison experiment was performed using...

การคัดเลือก Ecorace ไหมอีรี่เพื่อการปรับปรุงพันธุ์ Thai Agricultural
Duenpen Wongsorn; Siviali Sirimungkararat; Weerasak Saksirirat.
The selection of eri silkworm ecorace with high yield and distinct in morphological character is necessary for variety improvement. Five eri silkworm ecoraces, SaKKU1, SaKKU2, SaKKU3, SaKKU4 and SaKKU5 were surveyed and derived in country or from academic cooperation in international level. All ecoraces were cultured using castor leaves of TCO101 variety as food plant at 25±2 °C, 80±5%R.H. Based on morphological characters, there were similar except body of the 5th instar larva of SaKKU1 was covered with white powder and ripe larva showing shiny dominant yellow color. Life cycles were also similar durations, 46-53 days (SaKKU1), 42-53 days (SaKKU2), 42-52 days (SaKKU3), 40-56 days (SaKKU4) and 41-52 days (SaKKU5). SaKKU1 had highest survival rate at larval...
